The Choreography Of Driving
— Chapter 1 Start, Part 1. VISION in <The Lean Startup> by Eric Ries
The choreography of driving vs The launch of a rocket ship
With daily commute, I don’t need to think about the route and sometime I even feel my hands seem to steer and react at crossing before I realize where I am. Yet if you ask me to write down the end-to-end route with every single actions I have, it would incredibly complex when I have to slows down to think about it. This is choreography of driving.
A rocket ship must be launched with the most precise instructions on what to do step by step.
Which way should be used in startup business?
Lots of them are planning as to launch a rocket ship with lots of details and assumptions which lead to expected outcomes. However, some assumptions may be changed in the half way without being noticed, such as the change in customer behaviour. The company with lots of setting and investment already is unlikely to change their “rocket-ship launch”, which leads to “achieved failure” without any doubt.
Hence, we need to learn how to drive a startup business, which is called the Build-Measure-Learn Feedback loop(the process of steering). Like driving, as long as you know the destination, even though sometime your path is closed or you turn at the wrong crossing, you can still find a other way to get to the destination. Having a “Google Map” in driving a startup may also help, I suppose, which constantly adjusts with a steering wheel.
